Configuring Real Player for Optimal Performance

By default Real Player is configured to play streaming video at a very low bit rate. This causes streaming video to appear as if it is very low quality. To check your connection settings and change them if necessary follow these simple steps.

  1. Open the Real Player application and select "Preferences" from the "Tools" menu. (Note: If "Tools" does not appear at the top of your Real Player application as a menu item you may need to click the double arrow to see all menu items.)

  2. In the Preferences window click "Connection"

  3. On the right side of the window under the "Bandwidth" section choose your desired connection speed. (If you are using DSL or Cable select "DSL/Cable (768 Kbps)") Click "OK" at the bottom of the window to save your preferences.
  4. Now you can verify the speed you are streaming video at by viewing the Kbps below the video window while you are streaming a video. (Note: Streaming rate in Kbps is limited to the rate the stream is provided by the server and the actual available bandwidth to your computer at any given time.)
